Months ago, when I landed my first job in Argentina, I ceased being a tourist. Although not a citizen of this wonderful country I hold so dearly to my heart, one day I will. Not only that, our baby who arrives in December will be.
Despite, political problems and scandals, which I imagine will always remain (and what country is not guilty of this), but what can you do?
But the one thing I can not tolerate here is the bold face desecration of the land that surrounds us. The litter problem here to me is shameful!
Either my hormones went out of control with the heat, or I have reached my saturation point. After being on the train for 20 minutes and watching two little rug rats shred up the newspaper and throw it on the floor, and the father not saying a word, I said to the little boy "¿Es tuyos?" pointing to the offending balled up papers on the floor. Stunned the boy picked up the paper and tossed it under his seat. He stared at me in disbelief. The father didn´t say a word. He didn´t even look phased nor offended, but for the rest of the ride the little boy just stared at the crazy foreign lady who told him to pick up his mess.
Mr. Tango said to me "You can´t teach other people´s children. We can only teach our own." Perhaps he is right, the problem is cultural. Still it is the new millenium, there is absolutely no reason for this kind of behaviour pattern, no matter what country you live in. None.

Yea, maybe you should have told his dad ;)
Naw, it was the kids who were littering, not the Dad. Dad was just being passive. In the beginning of the trip, Dad was actually picking up the balled up paper bratty little girl was tossing around and putting it in his bag. Then the boy got in on the action, he was older and really should have known better.
Commuting to work really makes me grumpy and less tolerant of stupid people tricks.
tolerance is maybe not a good way for life.
tolerance is just a subjective idea , never , never , never a great Nation based its power (economical, cultural, etc) under the idea of tolerance.
tolerance with who? with people who doesnt can live with elementhal´s society rules ?
not tolerance ! FIGHT !

I bet the guy was sincere in his beleif that his daughter was being properly scolded by a stranger and that he shouldn't interrupt your most excellent child training procedure....lol
It's so easy to do! I mean how hard is it to put it in the garbage can?! Really now.
I'm not too sure how many garbage cans there are around in Buenos Aires, but I absolutely hate littering and even stuff my pockets with trash until I can empty it out in its proper place.
I would have been inclined to do the same as you did and then thrown away the trash myself if he didn't choose to.
Actually, there are garbage cans pretty much on every street. The Macri (the mayor) administration has really pushed to clean up the city and educate the public, since I have posted this. Not everyone has converted, but it is slowly happening.
